Before you fill a bag for consignment, it helps to know what buyers actually want. Pieces that sell quickly tend to have three things in common: quality, condition and timing.
Pieces that tend to sell well
- Outerwear. Wool coats, trench coats, leather jackets and quality rain jackets hold their value well.
- Tailoring. Suits, blazers and dress trousers in classic colors like navy, charcoal and black.
- Occasion wear. Cocktail dresses and wedding-guest outfits are often worn once and still look new.
- Designer and quality brands. Recognizable labels and well-made pieces in natural fibers.
- Quality denim, knitwear and leather. Durable pieces that people love to find secondhand.
What usually doesn’t sell
- Heavily worn fast fashion
- Items with stains, tears or odors that won’t come out
- Pilled sweaters and stretched-out knits
- Undergarments and swimwear, which we don’t accept
Condition is everything
We accept pieces that are new with tags, like new, or in good condition. Small issues our tailor can fix, like a loose button or a dropped hem, are usually fine. Because every accepted item is professionally cleaned and pressed before it’s listed, a good piece will look its absolute best on the Rack.
Ask yourself one question
Would you buy it again today, at a fair secondhand price? If the answer is yes, someone else probably will too.
