Silk is surprisingly strong for such a light fabric, but it’s sensitive to water, heat, sunlight and the things we put on our skin. A few simple habits will keep silk blouses, dresses and ties looking beautiful for years.
What damages silk
- Perfume, hairspray and deodorant. These can discolor and weaken silk. Let them dry fully before you get dressed.
- Perspiration. Sweat can leave yellow marks under the arms and weaken the fibers over time.
- Sunlight. Silk fades easily, so store it away from windows.
- High heat. A hot iron can scorch silk or leave shiny marks.
- Water spots. Even plain water can leave rings on some silks.
Read the label first
Some silks are labeled washable, but many are “Dry Clean Only” for good reason: dyes can bleed, and the fabric can shrink or lose its luster in water. When the label says dry clean, trust it, especially for structured pieces, lined garments and bright prints.
Wearing and storing silk
- Put silk on last, after makeup, perfume and hair products.
- Hang blouses and dresses on padded hangers. Fold silk scarves and knits loosely.
- Store in breathable cotton, not plastic.
- Steam rather than iron. If you must iron, use the lowest setting on the reverse side with a pressing cloth.
When to bring it in
If silk gets a stain, blot gently and bring it in quickly rather than trying to scrub it out. Tell us what caused the stain so we can treat it properly. The team at The Elementals Laundry offers specialty care for delicates.
