Suits are some of the best finds on any secondhand rack. Many were worn only a handful of times for interviews, weddings or special events. With the right fit and a few small adjustments, a pre-loved suit can look like it was made for you.
Start with the jacket shoulders
The shoulder seam should sit right where your shoulder ends, with no divots or overhang. Shoulders are the hardest part to alter, so get them right and almost everything else can be adjusted.
Easy alterations that make a big difference
- Sleeve length. Show a little shirt cuff below the jacket sleeve.
- Trouser hem. Decide on a clean break or a slight break over your shoes.
- Waist. Taking in or letting out the trouser waist is a common adjustment.
- Jacket sides. A little shaping at the sides can give a sharper silhouette.
Stick to versatile colors
Navy and charcoal work for almost everything: work, weddings, interviews and evenings out. Once you have those, add a pattern or a lighter color for warmer months.
Wear the pieces separately
A good suit jacket also works as a blazer over jeans or chinos, and suit trousers pair well with a knit sweater. One secondhand suit can give you several outfits.
Buy it, we’ll hem it
Find a suit on the Rack, try it on at our Acworth store, and ask at the counter about fitting it to you. The team at The Elementals Laundry handles alterations and repairs. One note: altered items can’t be returned, so make sure you love it first.
