A great coat is one of the best things you can find secondhand. Well-made outerwear is built to last for years, and it often costs far less pre-loved. Here’s what to look for.
Check the fabric label
Look for a high percentage of wool, cashmere or other natural fibers. Natural fibers are warmer, breathe better and age more gracefully than mostly synthetic blends.
Feel the weight
A quality wool coat usually has a reassuring heft. The fabric should feel dense and smooth, not thin or scratchy.
Look inside
- Lining: a full lining that’s neatly sewn in is a sign of good construction.
- Seams: straight, even stitching with no pulling or puckering.
- Pattern matching: on plaids and stripes, the pattern lines up at the seams and pockets.
Check the details
- Buttons should be firmly attached, and buttonholes should be neatly finished.
- Check high-wear spots: cuffs, collar, pocket edges and the underarms.
- Look for moth holes by holding the coat up to the light.
Focus on the shoulders
Sleeves and hems are easy for a tailor to adjust. Shoulders are not. Choose a coat that fits well across the shoulders, and the rest can usually be altered.
The Rire&Co advantage
Every coat on our Rack has been inspected, professionally cleaned and pressed by The Elementals Laundry. You can try it on in our Acworth store, and if the sleeves need adjusting, we can help with alterations.
