Most stains are fixable. The ones that become permanent usually get that way because of what happened in the first few minutes, or because heat locked them in later. Here’s what to do, and what not to do, when something spills.
Do: blot, don’t rub
Gently blot with a clean white cloth or paper towel to lift as much as possible. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper into the fibers and can rough up delicate fabrics like silk and wool.
Do: use cool water when in doubt
Hot water can set protein stains like blood, milk and egg. If you’re going to use water at all, keep it cool, and test on a hidden seam first if the fabric is delicate.
Don’t: iron or tumble dry a stained garment
Heat is the enemy of stain removal. Ironing over a spot or running it through the dryer can make it permanent. Check the area in good light before applying any heat.
Don’t: pile on home remedies
Club soda, salt, hairspray, dish soap, then bleach: layering products can create a new problem that’s harder to remove than the original stain. If it’s an item you care about, stop after blotting and bring it in.
Do: tell your cleaner what it is
Wine, coffee, oil, ink and makeup each call for a different treatment. When you drop off, point out the stain and tell us what caused it and anything you’ve already tried. It helps us choose the right approach the first time.
Watch for invisible stains
Clear spills like white wine, soda or sugary drinks can dry invisible and then turn brown over time. If you know something spilled, mention it even if you can’t see it.
